Immortal Romance vs Thunderstruck 2.

Posted By: Dave Letterman

Immortal Romance slot vs Thunderstruck 2It’s been a couple of months now since Microgaming released their Immortal Romance slot based on the same engine that drove Thunderstruck 2 and if I’m honest it took me a while (I play both of these slot machines at the excellent 32Red) to make up my mind in it. But now I have and I’ve worked out why someone might prefer Immortal Romance over Thunderstruck 2 and vice versa. For the record, I’m in the vice versa camp!

Initially I assumed – along with others I suspect – that Immortal Romance was going to be a clone of Thunderstruck 2 but it isn’t – not quite anyway. There are two major differences: firstly in the way the free spin features play out and secondly (and definitely more importantly) in volatility! In fact you could argue there is a third: the bet limits are different (see my Immortal Romance Bet Limits article for more info if you like to high-roll).

While you might class Thunderstruck 2 as ‘low-medium’ variance, the Immortal Romance slot is more ‘medium-high’. This is where it gets odd for me because I’m normally a huge fan of “high variance” slots like Great Blue and the original Thunderstruck so I would have expected to prefer Immortal Romance to Thunderstruck 2 but there you go.

Initially it looks as if the key to the higher variance in Immortal Romance is the way the reels are laid out, with the wild symbols falling next to “picture” symbols rather than “number” symbols (10-Ace as in Thunderstruck 2). But in addition to this, the “Wild Vine” random wild reel feature also appears to have become a modified version of Thunderstruck 2’s “Wildstorm” – modified in so much as it seems less frequent but awards bigger wins (I’m generalising here – doesn’t always pan out that way!).

Virgin Casino Mobile (for Android & iPhone users)

Posted By: Dave Letterman

Update, March 2013: Virgin Games has been bought by Gamesys (Jackpot Joy) and consequently the mobile versions of Virgin casino have been removed. For now, anyway. Thus, the following article is no longer applicable. For reviews of some other good android casinos, check out the Mobile Casinos FAQ (external site).

Original Article:

Having only just recently written about casino apps launching from the likes of 32Red on android and iPhone devices, Virgin casino has announced it has launched it’s mobile offering too.

Like 32Red, the Virgin Mobile casino uses games from Microgaming‘s (iSpin3) platform right now but unlike 32Red the Virgin creation differs in that it is written as a web app, meaning that it won’t be available as an “app” in the true mobile sense of the word but as a browser-based mobile casino that any user with an android or iOS device can play.

Playtech’s The Mummy Slot Machine

Posted By: Dave Letterman

Playtech - The Mummy SlotOK…this one’s complicated! It’s true to say that in recent months we’ve seen online slot machines push more and more boundaries. From 3D games to interesting new features the software developers are finding new ways to keep us entertained. Playtech’s new slot, The Mummy, (just released at Bet365 and Omni Casino) looks like it’s taking this to a new level!

It’s the latest in a line of Movie-themed slot games which include Kong, Rocky and even more recently The Dark Knight and while most of these are good eye-candy, this often means the emphasis is on entertainment rather than life-changing win potential! The Mummy slot is no different – in fact, it’s even more down that route! It also continues the popular  trend of theming slots on Ancient Egypt, the psychology behind which I analyse in this article if you are interested.

Update: You can now watch a full video of The Mummy here showing all 8 features triggering.

An initial wander through The Mummy paytable screens (it takes 8 of them to explain how this game works!) left me feeling a tad confused. And if I’m honest, a little disappointed because I like “high volatility” games and I’ve learned that the more features and “stuff happening” in a slot game, the less likely it is to be volatile.

Casino Apps – Casino games for iPhone & Android

Posted By: Dave Letterman

With the massive increase in demand for iPhone and Android apps it’s no real surprise that some casinos are getting in on the act. My favourite casino 32Red has also now launched a series of casino games for iPhone and Android using the popular Spin3 platform.

The selection of games includes a number of slot games including

2 New Aristocrat Slot Machines Online

Posted By: Dave Letterman

Aristocrat have released two more of their popular land-based titles online bringing the current number to 12 and joining titles like 50 Lions, Choy Sun Doa and Queen Of The Nile 2 (see further down for a omplete list). The new games are Miss Kitty and Dolphin Treasure both of which are available online at MoneyGaming.

Miss Kitty is a 50-line slot which is reminiscent of 50 Lions (also available at MoneyGaming) with the main difference being that instead of stacked wilds in the free spins you get sticky wilds on reels 2-5. With 50 Lions you get more stacked wild symbols added to each reel as the free spin feature goes on whereas from my experience playing Miss Kitty I’d guess it works the opposite way. Good game though.

Dolphin Treasure (see the video* above) will probably be more familiar to more people and is a bit more standard in that there are no stacked symbols here but a free spin bonus with the standard 15 free spins at 3x (retriggers possible) when you get 3 or more Treasure Chest scatters.

Davinci Diamonds Dual Play Online Slot (IGT)

Posted By: Dave Letterman

IGT have just released a new version of their popular Davinci Diamonds slot to the online world at Kerching Casino, called “Davinci Diamonds Dual Play“. It’s an interesting take on the original Davinci Diamonds effectively stacking 2 games one above the other and turning it into a 40-payline game.

What has previously been referred to as “Tumbling Reel” becomes known as “Tumble Thru” in the new version which is quite logical because the symbols drop from the top game into the bottom game when winning combos are hit. It also adds the “Big Win” indicator first introduced by IGT in their excelllent Star Trek slot which kicks in on a 10x win.

Playtech Casinos – Betfred Gets New Design

Posted By: Dave Letterman

Betfred is the latest casino to get a design overhaul* which IMO is probably not before time. The old site was a bit staid and boring although the new design doesn’t really break too much new ground following what is now a tried and trusted formula.

The design follows in the footsteps of other Playtech casinos like Bet365, Genting and William Hill (you can compare these casinos with Betfred on the AZOC Casino List) and more recently the predominantly IGT-powered Virgin Casino in terms of layout although in betfred’s case the user can make subtle alterations to the way images are displayed which is nice.

For those of you unfamiliar with Betfred Casino it’s actually one of the better ones. There is a download version which has all of Playtech’s games (including all the Marvel slots and movie slots like Gladiator, Kong and The Mummy slot) and a very comprehensive Instant Play casino, also powered by Playtech. The website also has a Games section with well known slot machines like Rainbow Riches and Cleopatra among others.

* NB: You may find the new and old designs get alternated during September/early October 2011 as it’s in an A/B testing phase.

Great Blue Slot – Maximum Bet Sizes

Posted By: Dave Letterman

Great BlueSomething I noticed recently at Playtech casinos with the Great Blue slot is that a number of them have been selecting lower maximum bets along with the Irish Luck and Penguin Vacation slots which have the same engine. I assume it is because they are high variance but have stacked wilds with 10x multipliers and can pay out some very big wins.

So below I have started to document which casinos have what max bets on Great Blue slots (RTP: 94.25%). If you are unfamiliar with the game then check out the Great Blue video at Slotjunkies (where the RTP info is sourced from) – it’s one of my favourite slots – high variance but with some amazing wins from time to time (as in the picture!)

Playtech recently released Great Blue into their no-download casino (consequently I have added a free version of Great Blue at Online Casinos Vegas) but where casinos have applied max bets to these games, they seem to apply to both the download and no-download versions.

Anyway, here’s the bet sizes of the better Playtech casinos as of October 2011 (more will be added as I find them).

New Land-Based Slots Focused Website

Posted By: Dave Letterman

Slots UK

Just recently I have been putting in some work on a new website which focuses entirely on identifying where UK based slot players can find their favourite land-based casino slot machines online.

The Slots UK site brings together all the games I can find (and recognise!) from my trips to casinos like London’s Empire Casino in Leicester Square and Brighton’s Rendezvous Casino (among others) and maps them to online casinos that have the same slots.

The website not only contains my opinions of the games and tells players where they can find them but also contains some reviews of the land based casinos I have visited.

Slot machines tracked and covered by the website include IGT favourites like Cleopatra and Pharaohs Fortune, Barcrest’s Rainbow Riches, Cashino and Elvis Top 20 along with some niche slot games like the Bar X AWP machines from Electrocoin, Aristocrat’s Queen Of The Nile 2, WMS Gamings’ Star Trek and popular Novoline Multi Gaminator slot machines, Book Of Ra, Dolphins Pearl and Lord Of The Ocean. The site shows players where they can play several other prominent slot machines online too.
