5-Reel Slots

The 5 reel slot games first came to the fore in Vegas and have eclipsed the old 3 reelers in terms of entertainment and fun value – in most cases anyway! Most online casinos carry both, but frankly I don’t touch the old 3 reel slots anymore. My penchant is for free spins slots and most of the ones reviewed here have that feature. That’s not to say that some of the more standard bonus rounds aren’t fun, it’s just that the free spins slots give more scope for larger wins, in theory having no upper win limit.

Wizard Of Oz Ruby Slippers Slot Machine

Posted By: Dave Letterman

When WMS launched their land-based Wizard Of Oz Ruby Slippers slot into their online casino Jackpot Party I’ll stick my hands up and say it didn’t really excite me initially. From experience, I’ve come to realise that most bi-name franchised slot machines tend to be built primarily to entertain the lower budget players whereas me, I prefer the volatile games with mega-big win potential.

So while I play a lot at Jackpot Party myself, I tended to play games like the Bruce Lee slot, the original Zeus and more recently, the Kiss and Spartacus slots which use WMS’s superb Colossal Reels technology. But one day I tried Wizard Of Oz Ruby Slippers and realised that I’d been missing out. Totally brilliant and as I write it has become my favourite slot machine bar none. Even games like Book Of Ra, Great Blue and Microgaming‘s seminal Thunderstruck slot machine seem to taken a back seat and believe me, I NEVER thought I’d say that (especially pertaining to Thunderstruck!).

5 Wilds On Thor Slot!!

Posted By: Dave Letterman

Thought you might enjoy the video I made of the new Thor slot for the Slotjunkies site this week. The game has just been released exclusively at BetFred Casino so I was giving it a run for my money and had a bit of a result: 5 wilds in the free spin feature!!!

Not only is the Thor slot actually a very decent game, it’s No 11 in the Marvel Series* and along with Fantastic 4, Hulk and the volatile but original Iron Man 2, I rate Thor as one of the best in the series although it is early days to be fair and I said the same about the original Iron Man game which I don’t play anymore.

Tiki Torch Slot Machine Now Online

Posted By: Dave Letterman

Aristocrat’s Tiki Torch slot machine will probably be well known to a lot of you and it’s just been ported into an online version (November 29th, 2012). It’s one of my favourite Aristocrat slots so I’m happy to see it made available for some online players.

The video (borrowed from the Tiki Torch review at Slotjunkies.net) has a nice free spin feature win in it with Big Win off a £2 bet. You’ll see that the online version of Tiki Torch seems identical to the version you see in local casinos and even has all the quirks of Aristocrat slots like the clicky reels, a bell when you hit the feature and the sounds that they have stuck with down the years that define the Aristocrat brand.

Immortal Romance vs Thunderstruck 2.

Posted By: Dave Letterman

Immortal Romance slot vs Thunderstruck 2It’s been a couple of months now since Microgaming released their Immortal Romance slot based on the same engine that drove Thunderstruck 2 and if I’m honest it took me a while (I play both of these slot machines at the excellent 32Red) to make up my mind in it. But now I have and I’ve worked out why someone might prefer Immortal Romance over Thunderstruck 2 and vice versa. For the record, I’m in the vice versa camp!

Initially I assumed – along with others I suspect – that Immortal Romance was going to be a clone of Thunderstruck 2 but it isn’t – not quite anyway. There are two major differences: firstly in the way the free spin features play out and secondly (and definitely more importantly) in volatility! In fact you could argue there is a third: the bet limits are different (see my Immortal Romance Bet Limits article for more info if you like to high-roll).

While you might class Thunderstruck 2 as ‘low-medium’ variance, the Immortal Romance slot is more ‘medium-high’. This is where it gets odd for me because I’m normally a huge fan of “high variance” slots like Great Blue and the original Thunderstruck so I would have expected to prefer Immortal Romance to Thunderstruck 2 but there you go.

Initially it looks as if the key to the higher variance in Immortal Romance is the way the reels are laid out, with the wild symbols falling next to “picture” symbols rather than “number” symbols (10-Ace as in Thunderstruck 2). But in addition to this, the “Wild Vine” random wild reel feature also appears to have become a modified version of Thunderstruck 2’s “Wildstorm” – modified in so much as it seems less frequent but awards bigger wins (I’m generalising here – doesn’t always pan out that way!).

Davinci Diamonds Dual Play Online Slot (IGT)

Posted By: Dave Letterman

IGT have just released a new version of their popular Davinci Diamonds slot to the online world at Kerching Casino, called “Davinci Diamonds Dual Play“. It’s an interesting take on the original Davinci Diamonds effectively stacking 2 games one above the other and turning it into a 40-payline game.

What has previously been referred to as “Tumbling Reel” becomes known as “Tumble Thru” in the new version which is quite logical because the symbols drop from the top game into the bottom game when winning combos are hit. It also adds the “Big Win” indicator first introduced by IGT in their excelllent Star Trek slot which kicks in on a 10x win.

Mega Big Win on Bruce Lee Slot!

Posted By: Dave Letterman

Thought you might be interested in this Mega Big Win I got last night on WMS Gaming’s Bruce Lee slot while playing online at Jackpot Party! Over 450x! If only that one missing wild had shown up, not that I’m complaining 😉

It was an interesting session actually. Apart from some good wins on Bruce Lee, I also discovered that the Fortunes Of The Caribbean slot is actually a Bruce Lee clone! So when the latter decided to go all stingy I just switched slot machines!

Also, during the 3 hours I was playing I hit no less than 4 Jackpot Party progressives! Two were minor Confetti jackpots, one was a 1-Star jobbie but one was a 2-Star haul for over £500. Ended up cashing out over £2,000. “Inconceivable!”

There are more videos and info on the online versions of the WMS games on the WMS Slots website. Oh, and one footnote: Jackpot Party Casino and consequently, WMS slot machines (‘cos they are exclusive to JP!) are not available in all jurisdictions at the moment.

IGT Star Trek Slot – Live Long & Prosper!

Posted By: Dave Letterman

IGT have released their new (as at March 2011) Star Trek slot online – ot long behind the land-based version rolled out in fact. I guess it’s going head-to-head against the WMS Star Trek game but they are two very different games.

Well, OK, not so different to look at – but very different to play. I like the WMS one (available exclusively at Jackpot Party Casino), especially the land-based version with it’s amazing vibrating control seat and stereo headrest but it loses some of it’s appeal online without the chair.

Bruce Lee Casino Slot (UK Only)

Posted By: Dave Letterman

The latest WMS casino slot to be launched at Jackpot Party is the land-based slot machine, Bruce Lee. A bit of a surprise here in that the gameplay has changed, most notably in the reel layouts but also in the way the expanding wilds are now stacked wilds and the bonus round (free spins) can be triggered in 3 seperate ways. Most of the time you will get 5 free spins – like on the casino slot machine you see in land-based versions – but in the online slot there is a way to trigger up to 20 free spins. All wth stacked wilds!

Playtech King Kong Slot Launches!

Posted By: Dave Letterman

Playtech have launched their new MGM licenced King Kong slot. Initially released at Omni Casino and BetFred Casino the game has now also been added to Bet365 and Sports Interaction Casino. On first look I have to say this game looks fantastic. It has footage and a soundtrack taken from the Kong movie and even the gameplay looks decent. There are free spins with stacked wild reels and pick ’em style bonuses which seem to happen with alarming regularity.

The slot works in two modes: Big City Mode is the one I prefer because the free spin bonus has stacked wild reels. The other mode, Jungle Mode, has sticky wilds in the free spins and it never seems to give me any decent wins although I guess the potential is there for some, er, monsters!

The Kong slot is now available at quite a few Playtechs along with other big-name games from the world of film like Gladiator and The Mummy. Check out the article on Playtech Casinos for more info and to decide where to play.

300 Shields – The Highest Variance Slot Ever?

Posted By: Dave Letterman

Hidden away deep in the depths of the Bet365 Games slots page is a game that you may never have come across. The 300 Shields slot machine is an “online only” slot with a Spartan theme, made by Next Gen gaming and it is a total beast of a game. Why? because I’d argue that it is the highest variance slot game I have ever played. It deserves respect and if you are lucky you can get rewarded with free spins with a massive 300x multiplier!
