Thunderstruck Slot Review (Microgaming)
Thunderstruck is arguably the most popular online casino slot, has been around since 2004 and has a shade over 95% expected return. It is a 5-reel, 9 payline slot, developed by Microgaming, and is available at all Microgaming powered online casinos, both in the download casino and in the Flash version where available. Interestingly, the Flash version feels “chunkier” and much more playable to me, so I tend to play that version more.
The facet of Thunderstruck that keeps most people going back is the 15 free spins bonus, where all winning spins are trebled (x6 if it includes a wild “Thor” symbol). It turns up fairly regularly (although this is a medium variance slot, so watch out for long dry spells) and is triggered by three orange “Scatter Rams” anywhere in view. On average, you’ll get around 30x payout from the free spins, but I’ve had up to 500x on a good day, rare though it is, and fairly regularly get 75-100x.
If you are lucky enough to get all 5 scatter Rams in view, you get 500x your triggering bet plus the 15 free spins! Now this is rare, but I’ve had it once so I know it happens. Also worth noting is that 3 or more scatters appearing again during the free spins retriggers another 15 spins.
Aside from the bonus, the Thunderstruck paytable is also well weighted, with 5 “Ice Hammers” or 5 “Staffs” giving you 750 coins, or 1,500 if it includes the “Thor” wild symbol. 5 Thors is worth 10,000 coins…now that I haven’t seen. Yet. The balance in Thunderstruck means that it’s a very playable slot, even if you are not getting the bonus round. It keeps you in a state of anticipation and that can be a good thing…and a bad thing. Watch your budget!
