Slots Review – Summer 2015

The Legend Of OLympusThis Summer has seen numerous new games being added to the various casinos’ portfolios. Beginning with Microgaming, we have Avalon in HD (wow! lol) and another old Rabcat game has been added to the MG Viper platform ‘The Legend Of Olympus’. (see photo) Let it suffice to say that typical of Rabcat games the variance is extremely low and your balance tends not to rise or fall much from the starting point even on a long session. The new releases need some information though:

Firstly, we’ve got a MG ‘BOGOF’ on the first 2 games (buy one get one free!) as despite a diversion from the usual 243-way games they are 25-line efforts and clones. Kitty Cabana and Hound Hotel being the titles. Maybe MG associate cats with ladies and dogs with men and felt it necessary to have both themes as a result – who knows?

The games aren’t bad though. You have a random in-play feature whereby a stacked wild can appear on the middle reel for example, and split into 3 randomly-placed single wilds for the next spin. The wilds don’t multiply but assist in enhancing your chances of a decent payline, especially as you have stacked wilds on the reels anyway!

So, onto the jewel of any game, the bonus round: As usual 3 scatters trigger the free games, positioned anywhere. You get a 3-level pick-me feature. Firstly, you select a door for a bonus wild. This can be one of 5: expanding wilds, sticky wilds, splitting wilds, wild reel(s) and lastly replicating ‘super wild’ reels whereby a wild reel will repicate to turn a second or third reel wild. On the second level you pick a multiplier which may be single or 2 or a max of how many scatters triggered the feature, i.e. 3,4 or 5x. The third level is simply the amount of spins, again bigger possibly if more scatters triggered the bonus.
(see picks photo)

The free games can be retriggered and the potential for big wins is there with a decent multiplier and a lucky pick on the ‘super wild’ reels free spins for example. The photo is of Hound Hotel but remember Kitty Cabana is identical in features – choose it if you prefer cats to dogs!

On to another 25-line MG release, Pistoleras. The game has 3x multiplying wilds and the higher character symbols are stacked. We have a Wild West Mexican theme here so your sexy senoritas are the highest symbols and those are the stacked ones. You get 2 bonus rounds. One is a simple pick-me feature with targets and hidden amounts (yawn!) paying the usual dross. (see photo)

The interesting one is the 3 ‘Stagecoach’ scatters which trigger the free games. You get up to 25 which can be retriggered and a 3x multiplier. So yes! with wilds you get 9x pays in the free spins! (see photos) Again we have big win-potential despite not having the 243-way format.

Not to be left out, as usual Netent have churned out a new game as they do with alarming regularity. This one is ‘Sparks’ but it doesn’t do much to light the room up! A 20-line game which you can opt to play R-L pays too for double the stake. The game has expanding wilds which can sometimes ‘clone’ adjacent reels. So say you have A-J-Q on reel 1 and expanding wild on 2, it can turn the symbols on reel 3 the same as reel 1 to guarantee a decent win – although as we know Netent games are cursed with the ‘micro win’ where some that look decent in fact only pays either a fraction of a credit or 2 or 3x stake……not a lot else to say! (see photo)

Lastly IGT have quietly slid out a new game – Apollo Rising. This has 5 reels with 8 rows and the higher symbols of rockets/astronauts are stacked 2 or 3 high. You don’t get a bonus game but on reels 2,3,4 you have an expanding wild which triggers 1 respin. Should another appear, you get a subsequent respin and so-on. As you have 100 lines this can give big win-potential similar to the WMS super-reels games like Red Flag Fleet for example. (see photo)
This seems quite a high-variance game saving up the big combinations while regular wins are quite small. It’s very addictive though and I’d say the best release of those described here.

Here’s looking to a long, hot summer of even more new games!
