Playtech’s The Mummy Slot Machine
OK…this one’s complicated! It’s true to say that in recent months we’ve seen online slot machines push more and more boundaries. From 3D games to interesting new features the software developers are finding new ways to keep us entertained. Playtech’s new slot, The Mummy, (just released at Bet365 and Omni Casino) looks like it’s taking this to a new level!
Update: You can now watch a full video of The Mummy here showing all 8 features triggering.
An initial wander through The Mummy paytable screens (it takes 8 of them to explain how this game works!) left me feeling a tad confused. And if I’m honest, a little disappointed but probably not for obvious reasons. I mean, The Mummy looks very nice and the design - as with Playtech’s other “Movie slots” King Kong and the excellent Gladiator - is very sleek. What disappointed me is that I like “high volatility” and I’ve learned that the more features and “stuff happening” in a slot game, the less likely it is to be volatile.
The Mummy will probably suit more players than not to be fair: not everyone can take the long lean streaks of volatile (high variance) slot machines and many want more “bang for their buck”. The trade-off is a more modest profit target of course. There is no doubt that Playtech’s Mummy slot machine is going to provide entertainment but the jury’s out on big profits! Although it has 25 paylines, Great Blue this slot ain’t!
I’m a regular at Bet365 casino and it always seems to get the new Playtech slots first so here’s a quick rundown of what to expect from The Mummy slot from my first play at Bet365. Rather like Microgaming’s popular “Thunderstruck II” and “Immortal Romance” slots, The Mummy requires you to unlock features as you progress. I’m not a fan of this but it’s generally not too tricky and you can understand why it’s programed this way. When that happens in a crap slot game then it simply won’t work but when it’s a slot machine people want to pay - and I suspect The Mummy will fall into that category - then it’s no biggie really.
The main game has scatters on all reels and wilds on 2+3+4. These can take on a new meaning in one or two of the features where extra wilds are awarded or, in the case of the Super Spin, are built up over several free spins before being added to the reels. Like I say, it’s complicated and no amount of reviewing The Mummy can actually replace playing the game for yourself to be honest. There are actually 8 different features to unlock which involve extra scatters, expanding wilds, extra wilds, free spins and respins and even “collapsing reels” (think Davinci Diamonds) although the main game itself is the normal spin-type slot machine (just in case you were wondering there!).
I’ll revisit this review when I have had a good chance to play The Mummy at my leisure and hopefully add a video of some of the features but judging from the paytable walkthrough, don’t hold your breath for that!
