5-Reel Slots

The 5 reel slot games first came to the fore in Vegas and have eclipsed the old 3 reelers in terms of entertainment and fun value - in most cases anyway! Most online casinos carry both, but frankly I don’t touch the old 3 reel slots anymore. My penchant is for free spins slots and most of the ones reviewed here have that feature. That’s not to say that some of the more standard bonus rounds aren’t fun, it’s just that the free spins slots give more scope for larger wins, in theory having no upper win limit.

If you’re a slot player and been to the Meccas of Vegas or Macau, you’ll probably be familar with Davinci Diamonds. I played it first at the Wynn in Vegas and again at the amazing Venetian in Macau and I couldn’t quite make up my mind if I liked it or not but thought I better add a heads up to Online Casinos & Slot Machines [.co.uk] at least as it’s a recognisable game and features “Tumbling Reels”!

Now, Wagerworks - a wholly-owned subsiduary of slot machine manufacturer IGT - have released the anticipated online version and amazingly, on time too! Wagerworks this week released the new version of the popular Cleopatra slot - the originally titled, “Cleopatra 2″ - into their online casino software (Flash based, no-download). Virgin Casino are the first to get it (as usual) and by the time you read this it will also be available at Paddy Power Games and Blue Square casinos. But there’s bad news for Americans: Wagerwoks casinos do not accept US Players. Blame your “we-know-best” Republicans for that piece of legislation passed in 2006! But for the rest of us. YAY! Any slot fan who has been to Las Vegas or Macau will probably have seen this one on the floor already. Wagerworks - they who are owned by IGT, the world’s largest land-casino based game manufacturer no less - have just added the Las Vegas slot favourite, Wolf Run, to their flash casino software. 

That means you can play Wolf Run online for real money at Virgin Casino, Blue Square or PaddyPower Games in a standard web browser with no game download required.

For USA players this is a bit of a bummer as US residents are not accepted at IGT-powered online casinos - sorry, blame your politicians.

Microgaming’s most popular “random jackpot” slot, Mega Moolah, is now available on the instant-play Flash casino at 32Red (or King Neptunes for USA players). The Avalon slot machine from Microgaming is another of my regular stop-offs at [32Red]. Released in early 2006, it’s a 20-payline free spins slot with a variable multiplier, following in the footsteps of the “Kathmandu” slot from 2005. It was one of Microgaming’s first “coin display” slots which I personally hated (everything showed in coins rather than credits) but thankfully they have since  added an option to choose which way it displays (go to “Options” and tick the “Show As Credits” box), although this doesn’t affect the “win counts” as shown in the picture below.

The 50,000 Pyramid is a free spins bonus slot from IGT subsiduary, Wagerworks, with a 95.02% expected return and wild symbol from Wagerworks where you can win up to 40 free spins at 6x multiplier - if you’re lucky! Can’t say I’ve ever had that one but I have had over 30 spins with 4x before now and it can be a rewarding slot. The thing I like most about it is that the bonus round occurs fairly regularly and I’d classify it as a low variance slot, meaning the risk of busting out is lower, but that’s countered by the fact that the wins during normal play are generally quite small.

Isis is not a slot for the faint-hearted! It’s a high variance slot from Microgaming with a lot of small-paying symbols and the occasional monster, along with a potentially lucrative free spins bonus round offering up to 30 spins at 6x multiplier. The slot was developed in 2005 by Microgaming and has become a real “love it or hate it” slot on the forums. Me? I’m a high variance fan, so I love it - well, like it a lot to be more accurate - but it can be a real bastard at times.

Aztec’s Treasure is a popular RTG slot, part of their entertaining “Real Series”. It’s a 20-payline 5-reel slot with a Random Jackpot, expanded wild symbol and free spins bonus.  The wild symbol occurs on reels 2, 3 and 4 only and is 3-symbols deep, so you could end up with all paylines covered, or just one. The slot is medium variance, meaning that there’s a reasonable chance of busting out without a big win or the bonus round.

Aladdin’s Wishes is a low/medium variance (risk) RTG “Real Series” slot - one of 20+ 5-reel slots comprising the Real Series to be found in RTG casino downloads. The Real Series share similar characteristics in that they are mostly 20-paylines (the odd one is 25), 5 reels, have bonus feature rounds (usually triggered by scatters) and each has a Random Jackpot which is awarded, oddly enough, randomly! The bonus is nearly always a free-spins bonus, although in Aladdin, it can vary.
