5-Reel Slots

The 5 reel slot games first came to the fore in Vegas and have eclipsed the old 3 reelers in terms of entertainment and fun value - in most cases anyway! Most online casinos carry both, but frankly I don’t touch the old 3 reel slots anymore. My penchant is for free spins slots and most of the ones reviewed here have that feature. That’s not to say that some of the more standard bonus rounds aren’t fun, it’s just that the free spins slots give more scope for larger wins, in theory having no upper win limit.

IGT have just released a new version of their popular Davinci Diamonds slot to the online world at Kerching Casino, called “Davinci Diamonds Dual Play“. It’s an interesting take on the original Davinci Diamonds effectively stacking 2 games one above the other and turning it into a 40-payline game.

What has previously been referred to as “Tumbling Reel” becomes known as “Tumble Thru” in the new version which is quite logical because the symbols drop from the top game into the bottom game when winning combos are hit. It also adds the “Big Win” indicator first introduced by IGT in their excelllent Star Trek slot which kicks in on a 10x win.

Thought you might be interested in this Mega Big Win I got last night on WMS Gaming’s Bruce Lee slot while playing online at Jackpot Party! Over 450x! If only that one missing wild had shown up, not that I’m complaining

It was an interesting session actually. Apart from some good wins on Bruce Lee, I also discovered that the Fortunes Of The Caribbean slot is actually a Bruce Lee clone! So when the latter decided to go all stingy I just switched slot machines!

Also, during the 3 hours I was playing I hit no less than 4 Jackpot Party progressives! Two were minor Confetti jackpots, one was a 1-Star jobbie but one was a 2-Star haul for over £500. Ended up cashing out over £2,000. “Inconceivable!”

IGT have released their new (as at March 2011) Star Trek slot online - ot long behind the land-based version rolled out in fact. I guess it’s going head-to-head against the WMS Star Trek game but they are two very different games.

Well, OK, not so different to look at - but very different to play. I like the WMS one (available exclusively at Jackpot Party Casino), especially the land-based version with it’s amazing vibrating control seat and stereo headrest but it loses some of it’s appeal online without the chair.

The latest WMS casino slot to be launched at Jackpot Party is the land-based slot machine, Bruce Lee. A bit of a surprise here in that the gameplay has changed, most notably in the reel layouts but also in the way the expanding wilds are now stacked wilds and the bonus round (free spins) can be triggered in 3 seperate ways. Most of the time you will get 5 free spins - like on the casino slot machine you see in land-based versions - but in the online slot there is a way to trigger up to 20 free spins. Playtech have launched their new MGM licenced King Kong slot. Initially released at Omni Casino and BetFred Casino the game has now also been added to Bet365 and Sports Interaction Casino. On first look I have to say this game looks fantastic. It has footage and a soundtrack taken from the Kong movie and even the gameplay looks decent. There are free spins with stacked wild reels and pick ‘em style bonuses which seem to happen with alarming regularity.

The slot works in two modes: Big City Mode is the one I prefer because the free spin bonus has stacked wild reels. The other mode, Jungle Mode, has sticky wilds in the free spins and it never seems to give me any decent wins although I guess the potential is there for some, er, monsters!

Hidden away deep in the depths of the Bet365 Games slots page is a game that you may never have come across. The 300 Shields slot machine is an “online only” slot with a Spartan theme, made by Next Gen gaming and it is a total beast of a game. Why? because I’d argue that it is the highest variance slot game I have ever played. It deserves respect and if you are lucky you can get rewarded with free spins with a massive 300x multiplier!

Playtech have just launched a new online slot machine called Iron Man 2, a follow up to the original Iron Man slot machine that they released in 2010 as part of their popular Marvel Slots series. This second version differs fairly substantially from the original Iron Man although obviously the overall theme is the same.

I played a demo of the Iron Man 2 slot on the Playtech stand at the ICEi show in London in January (2011) and it’s now been released to play for real at BetFred casino. The immediately obvious difference is that Iron Man 2 stacks most of the symbols on the reels in 2’s. The original Iron Man slot had stacked symbols but only for two of the graphic symbols - Ironman 2 stacks several more.

Last week (January 2011) I was up in London and playing the casino slot machines at the Empire casino in Leicester Square and the Palm Beach in Mayfair and I couldn’t hit jack on Cleopatra. It was so bad I ended up playing Book Of Ra and Pharaohs Fortune most of the time. The rubbish session was due in no little part to the fact that the land based version of the Cleopatra slot has a pretty poor payout (no pay on 2 9’s and often on 2 scatters even!).

One of the more recent Novomatic slot machines to come to online casinos (notably Sky Vegas) is the cult land-based slot game, Lord Of The Ocean. For those of you that have played the Book Of Ra slot, the Lord Of The Ocean Slot will be a little familiar, not because of it’s ocean-going theme, but the gameplay.

Note: Novomatic slot machines do not support US Dollars so if you are going to play them online, do not register an account using the USD currency or you will find the games do not load!

Lord Of The Ocean is a 9 line slot where the feature round is trigered by getting 3 or more scatter symbols in view. Not quite as easy as it seems as this is a relatively high variance slot game. The scatters also - like Book Of Ra - double up as wild symbols so getting them on reels 1 -3 is ideal!
