Avalon Slot Review (Microgaming)

Avalon Slot Machine

The Avalon slot machine from Microgaming is another of my regular stop-offs at [32Red]. Released in early 2006, it’s a 20-payline free spins slot with a variable multiplier, following in the footsteps of the “Kathmandu” slot from 2005. It was one of Microgaming’s first “coin display” slots which I personally hated (everything showed in coins rather than credits) but thankfully they have since  added an option to choose which way it displays (go to “Options” and tick the “Show As Credits” box), although this doesn’t affect the “win counts” as shown in the picture below.

The reason Avalon attracts me is the variable multiplier and the fact that it’s one of the few low/medium variance slots where you can actually get some big wins from – via the free spins off course. The free spins are triggered by 3 or more scatter symbols appearing in view and you are awarded 12 free spins, each win being accompanied by a random multiplier between 2x and 7x. Additionally, the “Gold Truck” symbol (see screenshot above) becomes an extra wild symbol doubling all wins in the process. You already have one wild symbol (the misty castle symbol above) so two on each reel has to be good!

The screenshot below shows the splash screen after the free spins have finished. This was one of my better results – multiply the coin count by 5p and you have £1,305 – normally you’d expect in the 10-12,000 coins range if you were playing 10 coins per line. In this instance I got 3 more scatters during the free spins, re-triggering the bonus for 12 extra spins mid-way through the bonus round, hence the big payout.

Avalon is a very entertaining slot – the bonus rounds appear relatively regularly (at a guess every 150 spins or so) and can be lucrative. It’s only currently available in the “download” versions of Microgaming casinos (see below), not the Flash “instant-play” casinos. But give it a shot if you like free spins slots I say!
